Research ND Awards Funding Requests Totaling $649,330

The North Dakota Centers of Excellence Commission awarded funding requests for two Research ND Grants totaling $649,333 at its meeting held on August 12, 2015.
Research ND promotes the development and commercialization of products and processes through industry/university research partnerships. Research ND provides matching funds to help companies pay for the university research.
Through Research ND and Research ND BIO, firms have the opportunity to leverage their research, development and commercialization funds and gain access to the creative talents and extensive research base of North Dakota’s Research Universities. Research ND and Research ND BIO matching funds are awarded on a competitive basis for projects based on proposals submitted jointly by researchers from a North Dakota research university and a private sector partner.
The following award requests were funded:
Research ND
NDSU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in partnership with Cyclops Technologies, Inc. was awarded $291,784 to develop and miniaturize a Through-the-Wall Sensor (TTWS) payload that can be operated from a small Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) that can be used by law enforcement and search and rescue teams. 

NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering in partnership with Elbit systems of America, LLC was awarded $357,546 to collect crop data using infrared, thermal, color and multi-spectral sensors on both large and small UAS. This data will then be compared to available satellite imagery and ground data collected using similar sensors. The analysis will be done by NDSU’s Center for Computationally Assisted Science and Technology (CCAST). 
The next deadline Research ND, Research ND BIO, and Venture Grant applications is August 22, 2015.
The overall goal of Research ND, Research ND BIO and Venture grant programs is to have a long term positive economic impact on the State and Private Sector through various means including, but not limited to; economic diversification, improved production factors, and the development of new markets.
