Post Date: Nov 02 2015

By ND Governor's Office
Gov. Jack Dalrymple today wished North Dakota a happy birthday and encouraged citizens to commemorate the anniversary of the day in 1889 that North Dakota joined the Union as the 39th state. This year marks North Dakota’s 126th anniversary of statehood. Last year, North Dakotans celebrated the state’s quasquicentennial with various events and activities, culminating with the grand opening of the newly-expanded North Dakota Heritage Center.
“We have so much to be thankful for in our state, a strong economy, innovative people and an outstanding quality of life,” Dalrymple said. “The ideals upon which our state was founded have remained at the core of what we do and who we are. This anniversary is a great occasion to celebrate our proud history and honor the generations of North Dakotans that helped make our state what it is today.”
On November 2, 1889, North Dakota was admitted to the Union when President Benjamin Harrison signed the Proclamation of Admission. South Dakota was also admitted on that day. The process towards statehood began on February 22, 1889, when President Grover Cleveland signed the Enabling Act. On October 1 of that year, North Dakota’s voters approved the state’s new constitution.
Dalrymple will commemorate North Dakota’s birthday by attending a ceremony to unveil the 2015-2017 North Dakota Blue Book. The ceremony will be held today at 10 a.m. in Memorial Hall of the state Capitol. Dalrymple will receive the ceremonial first copy of the book.
