Self Reliance Program

The Self Reliance program is one of the self-sufficiency programs administered through the seven Community Action Agencies (CAAs) in North Dakota. The goal of the Self Reliance program is to help low-income individuals and families become as self-sufficient as possible through a process of self-assessment, goal setting, self-help and continuing personal support.

Each client enrolled in the Self Reliance Program is assigned a case manager within the CAA. The case manager is trained to help the client assess their current situation; access emergency assistance; identify interests, strengths and skills; help set goals; explore career choices; evaluate education and training options; and provide support and follow up to the individual clients. In addition, Self Reliance case managers and other CAA staff also facilitate group sessions designed to foster greater self esteem, employment skills, and self sufficiency within low income families.

Self Reliance case managers and other self-sufficiency staff of the CAAs have completed training to become Certified Family Development Specialists. The Family Development training is offered through the National Resource Center on Family Centered Practice, a program of the School of Social Work of the University of Iowa.
